Market in a nutshell
§ Strong buying in key index pivotals backed by positive global cues and short covering ahead of the expiry of January 2009 series derivatives contracts on Thursday, 29 January 2009 led to strong rally on the domestic bourses. Except to the reaction of RBI's decision to keep the interest rates unchanged, markets witnessed firmness throughout the day.
§ BSE Sensex closed above the psychological mark of 9000 at 9,004 (up 330 points) and Nifty closed at 2,771 (up 93 points)
§ Nifty February Futures were trading at a discount of around 15-18 points to spot in the first half of the session but contracted to 10-12 points in the second half of the session.
§ BSE Metal Index jumped 5.5% to 4,672, with Jindal Steel and Power soaring 12.5% to INR 875. BSE Power Index rallied 4.6% to 1,784, with Reliance Infra up 11% to INR 540.
§ Market breadth was positive with an Advance: Decline Ratio of 1.6:1.
§ Satyam rallied 21.6% to INR 47 while Sterlite Industries (India) soared 11.7% to INR 267 after copper prices galloped in the commodities market tracking strong overseas cues.
§ Cash volumes were at INR 113,803 mn (NSE+BSE) as against a 5 DMA of INR 107,176 mn. F&O volumes were at INR 428,674 mn as against a 5 DMA of INR 360,974 mn.

§ Mphasis witnessed a volume rise of 830% at 1,638,602 with no change in price.

§ Rupee was trading at INR 48.92 against the dollar.
§ Nymex crude rose to trade at $46.1/bbl on signs that OPEC members are making good on the group's latest output cuts. Base metals were trading on a strong note with copper up 9% and lead up 7%
§ RBI keeps key rates intact; lowers GDP forecast to 7%
§ Siemens Q1 net profit down 81%
§ SAIL Q3 net dipped 56%, declared 13% dividend.
