Equity Market Update for - January 20, 2009 

Equity Markets For The Day

The Sensex ended the day with a loss of 229.02 points, or 2.45% at 9,100.55. The broad-based NSE Nifty declined 49.60 points, or 1.74% at 2,796.60

Top Gainer were NTPC(4.15%),Rel Infra(1.70%),Tata Power(1.18%)

Major losers today were Tata Steel(6.34%),Rel Comm(4.95%),Bharati Airtel(4.77%),JP Associates(4.55%),Sterlite(4.53%).

Overall market breadth was sharply negative. Out of the total 2,455 stocks traded at BSE, 1,018 advanced, 1,342 declined while 95 remained unchanged

G-sec market comments: G-sec markets opened strong on expectations of rate cut, but were weak on profit-booking and expectations of auction announcements.

The benchmark G-Sec bonds (8.24% GOI 2018) yields closed at 5.68% as against the previous close of 5.6%.

Liquidity was  comfortable, with over night money market rates in 4% range. The net RBI's LAF balance was positive at around Rs.49,000 cr.

This week, the markets are expected to take cues from   liquidity position and inflation numbers.
