H1N1 flu spreads, helper turns victim in Bangalore

The spread of the H1N1 flu is rapid, with even helpers of H1N1 victims being affected. An Air France ground staffer, who helped the mother-child duo that tested positive for the H1N1 flu while traveling from New Jersey to Bangalore, developed H1N1 symptoms and is admitted to Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Chest Diseases (RGICD).

As a part of the airlines ground staff, the person was in close contact with the passengers for nearly two hours, helping them with their luggage. He came to RGICD from the airport and was quarantined. Doctors said he is suffering from upper respiratory tract infection and his samples have been sent to National Institute of Virology (NIV), Pune. 12 persons including him, who came voluntarily, were screened at RGICD. Of the 12 cases, six suspected persons were quarantined and samples were sent to NIV. Along with him, a twenty-nine-year-old engineer, who showed similar symptoms, was admitted. The other four suspected cases are home quarantined. They include a sixty-year-old lady who landed from London on Sunday, two other women aged 30 and 34 years, who landed two days ago. The fourth suspected case is the another daughter (6) of the patient who tested positive for the H1N1 flu.
Among the twelve, the other six persons who got themselves screened at RGICD were treated as out-patients. The protocol doesn't apply to them as they have crossed the seven-day incubation period for contracting the H1N1 flu.
