[Investors Please Listen] Economic Survey 2008-2009: Indian economy witnessed a sharp deceleration in FY2009 as it grew by 6.7% from an average growth of 8.8% in the previous five years

Indian economy witnessed a sharp deceleration in FY2009 as it grew by 6.7% from an average growth of 8.8% in the previous five years. The slowdown was led by the global financial meltdown and consequent economic recession in developed economies. The pace of slowdown accelerated in the second half of 2008-09 with the sudden worsening of the international financial situation and the global economic outlook. While, the government has maintained its 7.0% growth outlook for FY10, which we believe is probably unachievable, the economic survey tries to propose some of the measures which can lead India to sustained 8%+ growth in long run. Although many of the measures outlined by the government as future possibilities were there in economic survey of 2007-08, the likelihood of some of them being implemented in next five year term of UPA government seems significantly high as they have full majority in the parliament now.
